Undergraduate Education in Family Medicine

The Department of Family Medicine's Undergraduate Medical Education Program coordinates all of the educational activity from MED I to MED IV, which involves Family Medicine as well as Family Physician teachers. We have many Family Physician tutors who are actively involved in the MED I and II COPS Curriculum as well as in the Communication Skills Program. Family Physician educators also participate in the Inter-professional Affairs Modules and other areas of the curriculum including teaching on Sexuality, etc.

In MED III, Phase 1 of the Clerkship, we offer a core four-week rotation as a part of the twelve-week Family Medicine & Psychiatry Block. Many students also choose to pursue additional Family Medicine rotations during this Block.

Our Department also actively encourages students to do Electives in Family Medicine in MEDs I, II and IV. We have an extensive Electives Program which offers many exciting opportunities for students to be introduced to Family Medicine as well as to explore special areas of interest relevant to Family Medicine, such as Administrative Medicine, Occupational Health, Research, etc.

It is our goal to play an active role within the Undergraduate Medical Education Program, to vigorously and enthusiastically promote Family Medicine to students throughout their four years of Medical School by providing exemplary rotations and exciting opportunities to explore Family Medicine in a variety of settings around the Maritimes. We have approximately one hundred and eighty Preceptors located throughout the Maritimes. Our Department communicates with Preceptors through an Undergraduate Newsletter and collaborates with our PostGraduate Program, including the organization of an Annual Faculty Development Workshop.
